While watching The Fireman of Folies-Bergere, it amazed my how well the editing must have been for that time. The work when the fireman sees women 'normal' at first and the seeing them semi-nude next must have been very scandalous. The editors did such a fantastic job when it came to seamlessly editing the whole thing together. The whole film just made me realize how much editing practices went into making these films that we take for granted today, especially with how much technology advances on a day to day basis. I also wanted to mention how humorous the entire film was. I have mentioned this in an earlier post but when i think of silent film I don't automatically think of something that will make me laugh. However, this and a couple of other films throughout the term have really changed my mind. I think comedy was shown in a lot of different ways when cinema was just starting. Cinema and films have changed so much since sound took off and people really had to change when acting and telling the stories. With all that changing the viewer started to changed how they watched and processed the film too. With all the evolving from the film and viewers it only makes sense to take a while to see the humor in something we are not use to watching.
So much of contemporary comedy draws on the style and iconography created during the silent era. This is especially true of physical humor for obvious reasons. Because comedians had to rely mostly on visual cues rather then dialogue they really developed physical comedy. In ways that we havent really evolved out of yet.
