In this present day and age silent films seem to be dwindling vastly in popularity. My question is why? I understand that Hollywood is promoting films that are story and linear based, but what would happen if something like Vampyr were to come out again? Personally, silent movies like Vampyr give a whole new experience to watching films. You almost have to retrain yourself on how to watch this film, and while the storyline itself does not matte all that much everything else seems to shine through. The emotion and movement that the actors portray tell a story in it self, whether it is the story of what the movie is trying to portray is questionable. However, it doesn't matter because you aren't yearning to understand what the story is, it is a spectacle that is displayed on screen. It allows for you to be able to create your own story and world by watching it and I believe that it is something that movies have taken away from the audience. While I did not completely understand what the premise of Vampyr was, the experience of watching something I have never seen before was truly a breathe of fresh air and I highly recommend for people to watch it if they are looking for something different from the main stream Hollywood.
Silent Cinema is sometimes called "the cinema of gesture" because visual aspects are tasked with telling the whole story. We are so used to dialogue and sound cues that these films can be hard to watch even though they can be such a rich source of knowledge not only about the past but about the medium of film itself.
